Honda introduces a cost-effective Lite battery plan for Activa e: targeting short-distance commuters

Honda has announced a more affordable battery subscription plan for its Activa e: electric scooter, targeting users with lower daily commuting needs. The new “Lite” plan, priced at Rs. 678 per month, provides 20kWh of energy, translating to approximately 23-25 km of range per day, based on average consumption patterns.

The Activa e:, showcased at the Auto Expo earlier this year, stands out as India’s first electric scooter equipped with swappable battery technology. This initiative allows users to exchange depleted batteries for charged ones at designated stations, although the infrastructure for such stations remains limited.

Prior to the introduction of the Lite plan, Honda offered two battery subscription options — the Basic plan at Rs. 1999/- per month with 35kWh of energy and the Advanced plan priced at Rs. 3999/- per month offering 87kWh. The Basic plan is estimated to support around 40 km of daily travel, while the new Lite plan suits those with more modest commuting requirements.

It’s important to note that Honda’s billing is based on total monthly energy consumption rather than strict daily limits. Therefore, occasional overuse can be balanced out by reduced usage on other days, providing users with some flexibility.

Despite the Lite plan’s cost advantages, certain limitations of the Activa e: remain unresolved. For instance, there is currently no provision for home-charging the battery and battery-swapping stations are not yet widely available across the country.

The Activa e: comes in two variants: the standard model priced at Rs. 1.17 lakhs and the RoadSync Duo, priced at Rs. 1.52 lakhs, featuring a 7-inch TFT display and joystick controls. Both models house dual 1.5kWh batteries, with a claimed range of 102 km under the Indian Driving Cycle (IDC) conditions.

Further expanding its electric mobility efforts, Honda has also set up an EV Concept Zone in Bengaluru. This space showcases the Activa e:, the QC1 scooter, the Moto Compacto and Honda’s electric racing Go-Kart (eGX), alongside a demonstration of the battery-swapping station.
