JLR to start assembling luxury vehicles in Tamil Nadu from early 2026
Jaguar Land Rover, the luxury vehicle arm of Tata Motors, is set to begin local assembly of its vehicles in Tamil Nadu starting early 2026. The company plans to produce models such as the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar at Tata Motors’ upcoming manufacturing facility in Ranipet.
The new plant in Ranipet is part of Tata Motors’ broader investment plan, with the company committing Rs. 9000 crore towards developing the facility. This site will cater to the production of next-generation vehicles for both Tata Motors and JLR, with operations expected to ramp up gradually over the next few years.
The Ranipet facility will utilise completely knocked down (CKD) kits for vehicle assembly, in line with JLR’s existing practice in India. Currently, JLR assembles several models, including the Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, at Tata’s facility in Pune, Maharashtra.
According to PB Balaji, Group Chief Financial Officer at Tata Motors, JLR’s manufacturing operations will eventually transition from Pune to Ranipet as production capacity expands. The facility is expected to reach an annual capacity of over 2,50,000 units within five to seven years, with production scaling up in phases.
JLR has been assembling vehicles from CKD kits in India since 2011, a strategy that helps reduce costs and improve accessibility for luxury car buyers in the domestic market. The planned expansion in Tamil Nadu reflects Tata Motors’ intent to strengthen its manufacturing footprint while supporting the growth of both its mainstream and premium vehicle offerings.
