Skoda and Volkswagen to introduce hybrid SUVs, sedans in India by 2028
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is preparing to enter the hybrid vehicle segment, with new midsize SUVs and sedans expected to arrive by 2028. The move marks the group’s broader strategy to meet evolving regulatory standards and rising demand for fuel-efficient vehicles in the Indian market.
These upcoming hybrid models will be built on a new platform known as IMP21 (India Main Platform), which is derived from the Volkswagen Group’s CMP (China Main Platform) architecture. Designed with significant local adaptations, the platform is tailored to suit Indian regulations and cost structures, while offering the flexibility to support internal combustion engines (ICE), strong hybrid and electric powertrains.
The development signals Skoda and Volkswagen’s intent to align more closely with India’s regulatory roadmap, particularly upcoming CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) norms, which encourage greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The group also sees this as a step toward its longer-term electrification targets in the region.
The new hybrid offerings from Skoda and Volkswagen will compete in the increasingly competitive midsize SUV and sedan categories. Key rivals include hybrid versions of popular models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster and a new Nissan SUV, all of which are set to launch in the near future. Currently, Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara and Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder are the only strong-hybrid options in the midsize SUV segment. In the sedan space, Skoda and Volkswagen’s upcoming hybrids will compete directly with the Honda City e:HEV.
The success of these future hybrid models will depend on market demand, pricing competitiveness and the evolving policy framework supporting electrified mobility in India.
