Tata Harrier EV Achieves 5-Star Bharat NCAP Safety Rating [Video]

Tata Harrier EV earns 5-star BNCAP rating, matching Mahindra XUV 9e’s scores

The recently launched Tata Harrier EV has secured a 5-star rating in the Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) crash tests, becoming only the second vehicle to achieve a full score in adult occupant protection under the programme. The electric SUV recorded 32 out of 32 points for adult occupant protection (AOP) and 45 out of 49 points for child occupant protection (COP).

Safety Performance and Features

The Harrier EV, tested in its top-end Empowered 75 and Empowered 75 AWD variants, comes equipped with several standard safety features across its range. These include six airbags (seven in Fearless and Empowered trims), electronic stability control (ESC), three-point seatbelts with reminders for all passengers, ISOFIX anchors on the rear outboard seats, and a passenger airbag cut-off switch. The vehicle also meets AIS-100 pedestrian protection standards, while higher variants offer an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) suite.

The crash tests revealed ‘good’ protection for all critical body regions for both the driver and front passenger dummies, which remains a notable achievement. The Harrier EV also received an ‘OK’ rating in the side pole impact test, reflecting solid structural integrity in varied impact conditions.

Comparison with Rival and Other Tata Models

Interestingly, the Harrier EV’s BNCAP score mirrors that of its direct competitor, the Mahindra XUV 9e, which is the only other SUV to achieve maximum AOP points under BNCAP. Both vehicles also share identical COP scores, reflecting growing safety standards in the Indian electric SUV market.

For child occupant protection, the Harrier EV earned full marks in the dynamic crash tests and child restraint system (CRS) installation evaluation. The SUV scored 9 out of 13 points in the vehicle assessment portion. Rearward-facing child seats were used during tests, secured with ISOFIX anchors and a support leg.

In comparison, the internal combustion version of the Harrier previously achieved a 5-star BNCAP rating but with slightly lower AOP (30.08/32) and COP (44.54/49) scores.

The Harrier EV now becomes Tata Motors’ eighth model to receive the top BNCAP safety rating, reinforcing the company’s commitment to occupant safety in its product lineup.
